this question is regarding gout. my husbands foot is starting to have pain and its a litle bit swollen now. i have allopurinol 300mg and indomethacine 75mg can he take bothe of them at the same time? we dont have medical insurance and cant go to the doctor. he was given allopurinol before when his uric acid was high (when med ins was still effective). please help. thank you.

Allopurinol is mostly used as daily medication to control uric acid levels. Indomethacin is used for treatment of gout flare ups. Both drugs can be used at the same time temporarily. This information comes from an actual physician and is not somebody’s uninformed opinion. I am surprised that Drugs.com allows these potentially dangerous opinions to posted on what is normally a reliable and well informed resource. I am worried that somebody will act on this misinformation and be harmed or cause harm. Please stop this.

Andyman is correct. My gout flare ups were extremely painful and Indomethacin was used to treat acute attacks. Once subsided, allopurinol at 300mg was prescribed as a preventative measure. This kept my uric acid levels around 6.0 for aobut 3 years. I eventually went down to 100mg and then had stopped taking for a year until a recent flare up caused me to have to take Indomethacin again (and on day 3 still no concrete relief). I probably will have to go back on the allopurinol. A side note, I have found when I have an attack and take the Indomethacin initially, the uric acid crystals will dissolve or break up and travel to other joints. Case in point with current flare, from my left toe to my left ankle and right big toe. Also, my situation my not be the same as yours by way of diet, etc. This is just my own experience and shouldn't be taken as medical advice.

Are you sure it is gout?
Do not take the allopurinol as it may prolong the acute attack of gout.
The indomethacin will treat the pain symptoms. The usual dose for gout is 1 to 2 capsules twice daily, with food. It only needs to be taken while he has the gout symptoms.
You should see a doctor if his symptoms worsen or he has another attack of gout in the near future.

That was NOT an answer. My foot specialist doctor has me on 50mg Indomethacin (3x daily) AND 100mg of Allopurinol (2x daily) for Gout.
